Glock 45 Gen 5 Pistol Handgun

The Best Pistols You Can Buy Today (Tested & Reviewed)

What is the best pistol you can buy? With so many different handguns out there, it can be pretty hard to answer that question.

But having such a large variety is actually a good thing. This gives you the opportunity to pick the pistol that is best suited to a specific purpose.

I’ve had the pleasure to shoot many pistols over the years. I can say that some are better at certain tasks or jobs than others.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite pistols, and what they excel at!

What’s the Best Overall Pistol & All-Purpose Handgun?

The best all-purpose pistol is The Glock 19.

Glock 19 Review

By far my favorite pistol in my arsenal is my Glock 19. This gun is my go-to for about everything, from simple range days to concealed carry.

The Glock 19 is a mid-sized 9mm handgun that holds 15 rounds. I’ll admit, I never liked Glock handguns until I tried one.

These pistols are bombproof. While they aren’t pretty, they are functional. With so many aftermarket parts and accessories, you can build this gun how you prefer.

The Glock 19 in particular is the perfect size to serve as an all-purpose weapon. If I could only choose one pistol to own, it would be this one.

Best Pistol for Home Defense

The Smith and Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Review

One of the first pistols I ever purchased was the original Smith and Wesson M&P9. The M2.0 is the new and improved version, and it is one of the best pistols out there and great for home defense.

With its aggressive texturing, you will always have a solid grip and it will never slide out of your hand. This can be pretty important if you ever have to use it in the dark!

You are also able to swap out the palm swells to ensure a perfect fit for your hand.

It is also very easy to install optics and lights on this pistol so you can set it up for low-light situations. And with 17 rounds in the magazine, it also holds plenty of ammunition in case you need it!

As you can see, I really like Smith and Wesson pistols (but don’t worry, we will get to the Glocks!). The Shield is a slim single-stacked pistol designed to be concealed carried.

With an 8 plus 1 capacity, it still carries enough rounds for any defensive situation. It still manages to stay small, lightweight, and easy to carry around.

My Shield has been carried around many places. It’s my favorite option when I want something small and comfortable.

Best Cheap Pistol

The Ruger Security 9 Review

I don’t like the term “cheap” when it comes to pistols, so I will leave out infamous cheap pistols like Hi-Points. But for those that want a great pistol at a budget price, I love my Ruger Security 9. Ruger makes some excellent firearms.

I am always impressed with their quality, and the Security 9 is no exception. This pistol holds 10 9mm rounds plus 1 in the chamber.

It can easily be concealed carried or used as a home defense weapon. With so many great features and extras, it’s hard to believe that this is a budget pistol!

Best Pistol for Beginners

The Springfield Hellcat 9mm Review

Almost all the pistols I’ve mentioned here are excellent choices for beginners. But I have had the pleasure of shooting the Springfield Hellcat that a good friend of mine purchased.

Not being a huge fan of Springfield pistols, I’m surprised at how well it felt in the hand and how easy it was to shoot. Its size makes it comfortable and lightweight. But it’s still large enough to hold 13 rounds.

I’m a big fan of the 9mm round and think it is a perfect choice for beginners. This gun is available in larger calibers as well.

Best Pistol for Hunting or Self-Defense While Hunting

The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan Review

The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan is a revolver made for hunters to carry in bear country. Available in calibers such as 44 Remington Mag, 454 Casull, and 480 Ruger, this little gun packs a punch!

I bought my Super Redhawk to carry while hunting in grizzly country. While I thankfully haven’t had to use it in the field, it has seen use at the range. It handles the recoil surprisingly well.

With a molded oversized grip, you get a good handle on the gun and can comfortably control it. And should you ever need it for protection, it packs enough power to put down just about anything.

Best Pistol for Target Practice

The Walther P22 Review

When it comes to target practice, it is important to practice with the guns you intend to use. However, I always love to shoot something for fun during my range days without spending too much on ammo. This is where the Walther P22 comes in.

A pistol chambered in 22 LR, this little gun is so much fun to shoot. While it only holds 10 rounds, it is lightweight and has zero recoil.

This gun is a great option for those that want to shoot without breaking the bank.

It is also a great pistol to introduce new shooters, women, and kids to the sport of shooting. This is thanks to its ease of use and no recoil.

FAQs about Pistols

What pistol brand is best?

All brands and companies will have pros and cons. Not all brands are equal, so do your research. I prefer to stick with reputable companies such as Glock, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, etc.

What caliber of pistol is best?

The caliber you shoot depends on your needs. For general purpose or home defense, calibers such as 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, and 380 ACP are popular choices.

Is a pistol enough for home defense?

Pistols make a great choice for home defense due to their small size. This makes them quick and accessible during an event, and they have great ammo capacity as well.
