Nickels seeks ‘clarity’ on effort to ban guns

SEATTLE - Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels says he’s hoping for “further clarity” on his authority to ban guns on city property.

Attorney General Rob McKenna issued a nonbinding opinion Monday that says cities lack the authority to ban guns because local laws would conflict with state regulations.

In a statement, Nickels said the city has a “moral responsibility” to pursue what he calls common sense gun laws.

“We cannot wait for another incident, or another victim,” he said. “The simple fact is our public buildings, events, parks and community centers are safer without guns.”

Nickels said last spring he would order a ban after a shooting at the Seattle Center’s Folklife Festival that wounded two people.

The Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms threatened to sue the city if Nickels issued a gun ban.

Obama’s “Brown Shirts”

September 26, 2008 on 1:46 pm | In Uncategorized | 2 Comments

It would appear that the Obama campaign has about as much respect for the first amendment as it does the second. They call them “Truth Squads”, I call them something else…something I can’t post on a family oriented blog.

It followed me home…

September 5, 2008 on 8:15 pm | In Uncategorized | 4 Comments

It followed me home, at least that’s what I’m going to say when my relatives and friends ask me why I bought yet another rifle. Me, depression and lots of cash don’t mix well. It makes it harder to tell yourself “No!

I’d been drooling over this rifle for months now, and with the above mentioned circumstances being what they are, and factoring in a possible Obama/Biden presidency, I gave in to my baser instincts and plunked down the cash for this bad boy. And what a bad boy it truly is! That rustling sound you hear is my future paper targets quaking in fear.

Gun grabbers and people suffering from severe cases of PSH should leave now. You have been warned.

You’re looking at a Bushmaster Varminter in .223/5.56mm with the 24″ fluted and parkerized chrome-moly barrel. The rest of the rifle is finished in a matte black. The rifle comes with a flat top upper and has scope mounts already installed. I personally like the A2 buttstock better than the adjustable one, and the pistol grip fits my hand like it was made for it. It only came with a five round magazine, but I’ll be remedying that shortcoming soon. I love the two stage match trigger! There’s a very light first stage with a detent at the end, and just a little more pressure on the trigger and it lets off smooth as glass. I don’t have a trigger pull gauge, but I’d put it right in the 4.5 pound area. I outfitted it with a Bushnell Banner 4-12×40 scope with the adjustable objective,  a Rock Mount pivot bi-pod and a Uncle Mikes padded nylon ultra sling. I have yet to take it up to the range, but when I do I’ll have a full range report complete with pictures.

Probation for Farina

July 18, 2008 on 10:26 am | In Uncategorized | 2 Comments

Good thing he is a celebrity, he could have done time…

Dennis Farina receives 2 years of probation for carrying gun into Los Angeles airport

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Dennis Farina may be able to carry a gun on-screen, but he won’t be able to own one in California for several months.

The actor’s attorney pleaded no contest on Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of bringing a weapon into a secure area at Los Angeles International Airport. A court commissioner sentenced him to up to two years of probation and ordered him to pay $1,991 in fines, said Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.

While on probation, Farina cannot own or carry a gun, Mateljan said.

A former policeman, Farina was arrested May 11 for having a .22 caliber semiautomatic handgun in his briefcase. He promptly apologized after his release, saying he forgot he had the gun in his baggage.

Farina has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including a three-year stint on “Law & Order” as detective Joe Fontana.

Other charges of carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a loaded firearm were dismissed.

Firearms Industry Wins Appeal in NYC;
Lawsuit Against Gun Makers to be Dismissed

NEWTOWN, Conn. — Today, a Manhattan-based federal appeals court ordered the dismissal of a lawsuit filed against firearms manufacturers by the City of New York that sought to hold the manufacturers responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms.

Judge Robert J. Miner, writing for the U.S. Court of Appeals, held the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, enacted in 2005, is constitutional and that Brooklyn, NY, federal court judge Jack B. Weinstein misinterpreted the law by not dismissing the case.

Another reason not to buy a gun at Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart to film gun sales in bid to fight crime

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world’s largest retailer, unveiled plans on Monday to film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands.

Wal-Mart, which is the largest seller of firearms in the United States, agreed a 10-point code, which also includes rigid inventory controls, with a bipartisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns led by New York’s Michael Bloomberg.

The retailer said it will develop a first-of-its-kind computerized crime gun trace log that will flag purchases by customers who have previously bought guns later recovered in crimes.

“Wal-Mart currently uses a strong point of sale system,” said J.P. Suarez, senior vice president and chief compliance officer of Wal-Mart. “This code is a way for us to fine-tune the things we’re already doing and further strengthen our standards. We hope other retailers will join us.”

The Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership is designed to strengthen the points in the gun purchasing system that criminals have exploited in the past, Wal-Mart and the Mayors Against Illegal Guns said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 46 percent of its criminal gun trafficking investigations involved cases in which someone who is not legally allowed to purchase a firearm does so through the use of a proxy, known as a straw buyer.
