Coyote Ugly Part III

Ride Fast & Shoot Straight has more on what looks like a nationwide coyote problem. I wrote about this on my blog a couple of times recently here and here.

The coyote attacks are increasing, again.

Without warning, a coyote rushed out of the underbrush and attacked Winston, leaping on the 80-pound dog’s back. I screamed so loud,” Keating recalled. “I never thought he would attack us. I just couldn’t believe it.”

Maybe that is why the coyotes are there in the first place. People don’t believe a wild predator would attack them. Did you think it was a vegan coyote?

Coyote Ugly Redux

This is the third attack in SOCAL by a coyote on a small child in the past five days. If the people up in Oregon aren’t careful this is exactly what could happen.

Shoot the damn things! Kill them before it’s too late! When a wild animal loses it’s fear of humans and begins preying on us and our pets, it’s past time for sitting around the campfire singing Koom-ba-ya! This may offend some peacniks out there, but I don’t care. When it comes to my kids and family verses a threat, two or four legged, the threat’s going to lose every time.

Spate of Bold Animal Attacks, Including One at a Popular Local Park

LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif. - May 8, 2008

Melissa Rowley left her children playing in the front yard for only a moment to step into her house.

When she came back a coyote was dragging her daughter away.

It was the third time in five days a coyote had posed a threat to a small child in Southern California, San Bernardino Sheriff’s spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said.

The coyote grabbed the 2-year-old by the head and tried to drag her towards the street in the mountain community of Lake Arrowhead on Tuesday.

When Rowley came out of the house and ran toward her daughter, the animal released the girl and ran away.

Rowley took her daughter to a hospital where the toddler was treated for several puncture wounds to the head and neck area, and a laceration on her mouth.

No, not the movie, but real live Coyotes are threatening local residents and pets, even killing and eating some. Pets, not the residents. Sounds to me like a valid reason to be armed in the park to me.

Coyotes get ugly in Tigard park

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services works to rid Durham Park of problem coyotes

By Darryl Swan

A trio of run-ins between coyotes and residents living near Durham Park has prompted a federal effort to try to catch, and kill, the offending canines.

Three confrontations have triggered the effort, the latest last Thursday when a resident discovered his Dachshund had been snatched from his yard and dragged to the nearby railroad tracks, where it was later found to have been killed.

There have also been showdowns between the coyotes and trail users in the area, said David Williams, the state director for United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services.

One scenario involved a woman who was walking her Irish setter on a leash. A number of coyotes that refused to leave after the woman attempted normal scare-off maneuvers, such as yelling and throwing stones, attacked the dog.

“She came in really shaken up about it,” said Roland Signett, the Durham city administrator.

Signett said there have been numerous reports of missing dogs and cats in the adjacent neighborhood.

“With all of the things that have been building, it was starting to be a concern that not only pets, but humans could be bitten by one of these animals,” Signett continued. “That’s when we took the step to say, ‘OK, we have to do something about this.’”

Some however aren’t happy about the possibility of these wild predators being killed for their and local pets protection. I guess that’s all that can be expected from people who learned everything they know about animals from Walt Disney. The same kind of people are probably the same ones who would see no need to be armed either.

John Klosterman and his girlfriend since 1975, Leslie Fleet, live near Durham Park.

“We’ve never had a problem (with coyotes). We see them all the time. We think it’s a real treat to see them,” he said.

The couple frequently walks their dog, a 70-pound German shepherd mix named “Blaze,” around the Fanno Creek loop in the park. When they heard through the rumor mill that there was an effort to rid the park of a coyote or two, they first were led to believe leg-hold traps would be used.

Later, they found out neck snares would be used instead, not the kind of news that made him flush with comfort.

There’s a lot of people around here who don’t like that,” he said.

I wonder how long it’ll take for the treat to turn into his pet German Shepherd? I guess it depends on how hungry the Coyotes are. Once all the other neighborhood pets get eaten would be my guess.

Some people.
