Restraining Orders Are Worthless
Sadly, once again we learn that the only good restraining order is one printed on a sheet of Kevlar.

Deputy Chief Terry Gallagher said the woman’s two daughters ran upstairs and called 911 to report that the 41-year-old man was in their house with a gun.
Officers heard two gun shots as they arrived at the house in near the intersection of West 13th Street and South Oak Street, and found the man and woman dead inside.
The two girls, age 9 and 11, were found hiding in a closet and were not hurt.
Gallagher said the man and woman, whose names have not been released, broke up about five months ago. The 35-year-old woman who was killed had also filed for an anti-harassment order.
Detectives cordoned off the area and had to wait for a search warrant before going back in the home to begin collecting evidence.
Another B.S. Anti Editorial
No guns in school. Period.
Sympathy for an Oregon high-school teacher with a restraining order against an ex-husband ought not extend to allowing her to carry a gun to school.
The Medford School District teacher, known as Jane Doe in court papers, wants an exception to the district’s policy against guns on school property so she can carry her Glock 9-mm. The answer forthcoming from a Jackson County Court judge ought to be a resounding no. The teacher’s fear of her ex-spouse deserves a compassionate response — one that doesn’t lead to pistol-packin’ teachers.
The school could beef up security. Or the teacher could be given a paid leave while sorting out her personal problems. The restraining order could be strengthened or broadened for maximum protection.
There are solutions that don’t require a gun in the classroom. The teacher has a concealed-carry permit but that doesn’t give her the right to bring a gun to class.
If teachers fearful for their safety can carry guns, what about other school employees, or students fearful of the playground bully? Exceptions could create a school climate that is dangerous and distracts from education.
The 1994 federal Gun-Free Schools Act is threatened by cases such as the one in Oregon. The Christian Science Monitor reports the Michigan and Ohio legislatures have pending bills permitting school employees to carry concealed weapons on school grounds, while others have considered the possibility.
Washington state law prohibits anyone other than law-enforcement personnel from possessing weapons on school premises, school-provided transportation or any facility exclusively used by public or private schools. Legislative efforts led by Rep. Pat Lantz, D-Gig Harbor, would remove legal ambiguity by defining what is considered a weapon and making possession of one a felony rather than a gross misdemeanor.
Oregon’s Jane Doe may fear she’s in harm’s way. But taking a gun into her classroom puts students in the same predicament.
One of the reasons I carry a Gun
The world, is not a safe place. Period. Consider the following excerpt:
“When they came back outside, Watson says he was confronted by Fennessee, who he believes was watching the house. The suspect reportedly accused him of having relations with his child’s mother.
“Let me put my babies in the car,” Watson said he told the man, before denying the claims.
When Watson turned toward his vehicle, he says Fennessee shot him in the back and he went down. It was then that he says Fennessee stood over him with the gun pointed at his head.
“Don’t kill me in front of my babies,” Watson said he pleaded with Fennessee.
Instead, he said the suspect yelled an obscenity and shot him again and again, in the head, back and chest.
“I thought I was going to die,” he said. “I could hear my 3-year-old screaming, ‘He shooting my daddy! My daddy dead!’ “

Restraining Orders Work!
…actually, they don’t, unless they’re made out of Kevlar. Reference this sad story. Apparently the psycho ex-boyfriend made some threats on her life and so she moved, changed her phone number and got a restraining order. She even went so far as to email a photograph of the psycho-ex to the other people in the building. What she should have done is got a gun and learned how to use it. I should also point out that the Victim worked in a “Gun Free Zone”, i.e., a “Victim Rich Zone”. It’s like posting a sign inviting every psychopath and sociopath to come and kill with impunity because no one will be able to resist them. Let me make one thing clear. In my opinion, it would have been better for the victim to lose her job for being armed, than to keep it and become a statistic.
What struck me as particularly ironic, was the following sentence:
“Wittmier said he didn’t believe campus police were aware of the restraining order against Rowan. He also said Rowan likely did not have permission to carry a handgun on campus.”
First of all, when it came to protecting her life, the restraining order was about as useful as the “Gun Free Zone”. Second, whether or not the psycho-ex had permission to carry a handgun on campus is immaterial. Criminals by definition do not obey the law.
According to the news story, there were numerous clues about what was going to happen. Looking back it was an inevitability, so why did no one do anything to prevent it? Why did no one give the victim the protection she needed so desperately? It is a fact the Police cannot protect you and are under no obligation to. Their job is to come after the fact and draw an outline around your corpse and collect evidence. In a life or death situation, the only one who can protect you, is you.
We’ll never know if she attempted to reason with him. We’ll never know if she tried to use Karate or Kung-Fu. We’ll never know if she attempted to kick him in the groin or gouge out his eyes with her keys… One thing we do know is that she was unarmed in a gun free zone when her attacker struck. A gun may not have saved her life, but it certainly would have “leveled the playing field” with the criminal.
I have two young daughters, and when they grow up, if they are in a similar situation, I will make sure that they are safe. They will be armed and know how to shoot. They will be able to protect themselves!
This tragedy could have been prevented. The victim could have been found standing over the corpse of her psycho-ex with a smoking gun, instead of on the floor in a pool of blood.
We need to change the law in this state to allow law abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon on school grounds. We need to allow the potential victims out there their Second Amendment right to carry a gun for protection. Until we do this, there will be more restraining orders and more dead victims. How many more dead victims do we need?
