Here We Go Again
Lautenberg off his meds again introduces gun show bill
WASHINGTON - People wouldn’t be able to buy firearms at gun shows unless they first undergo background checks under legislation Sen. Frank Lautenberg introduced today.
The New Jersey Democrat introduced a similar bill in 1999. The Senate approved it by one vote. But the measure subsequently died.
The current bill to close the “gun show loophole” is co-sponsored by Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and eight other Democratic senators, including former presidential candidate John Kerry of Massachusetts, have also signed on.
The bill was discussed at a Capitol Hill news conference attended by law enforcement officials, survivors of Virginia Tech shooting victims, and advocates such as Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
“It defies common sense that a loophole in federal law lets unlicensed dealers sell firearms at gun shows without running a background check on the buyer. Our legislation would require background checks for every gun purchased at every gun show across America,” Lautenberg said in a statement.
A 1993 federal law requires people seeking to buy firearms at gun shops and other licensed businesses such as pawnshops to undergo background checks. But a loophole allows them to buy guns from unlicensed dealers at gun shows, Lautenberg’s office said.
Supporters say that loophole allows convicted felons, fugitives, domestic abusers, and others who would fail the background checks to still purchase firearms.

Gun-Shaped Belt Buckle Causes Police Response
EDMONTON — A belt buckle shaped like a pistol got a lot of attention at Edmonton City Hall.
The tipster says he noticed the gun as the man was tucking in his shirt. Police descended upon the building shortly before noon yesterday after receiving an anonymous tip that a man was in one of the building’s washrooms with a gun.
But it turned out there was no weapon, just the oversized belt buckle.
Edmonton Police Service spokesman Jeff Wuite says the tipster said there was a suspicious-looking guy in the restroom with a firearm tucked into his belt.
Officers responded and found the man, along with two other people.
The trio were put on the ground, handcuffed and searched. Wuite says even though the call turned out to be bogus, police take all firearms calls seriously.
Want!
Man, wouldn’t this just make the anti’s crap themselves? And it’s only $799! Time to start saving! I suppose though I really should be saving for an AR. Hmmm…
“These are Romanian FPK sniper rifles in 7.62×54R caliber, PSL style, with two 10rd magazines and a side mount 4x scope. Long barrel with muzzlebrake, Dragunov style stock (color may vary from picture). Nice excellent condition firearms.”

Consider the following:
“Allowing people to run around with machine guns in order to maintain the integrity of the Bill of Rights is a sickening display of blind faith.”
…and…
“The Second Amendment was drafted in the infancy of our nation and is not just inapplicable to our contemporary nation but detrimental to our contemporary nation.”

Another Case of PSH
A recent posting at Silicon Valley Moms Blog exposes an intense case of hopolophobia. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised (this is California after all), but it still amazes me how irrational some people get when exposed to guns, even toy guns. Go read her posting and be amazed… There’s some priceless nuggets of irrational fear in the comments section too, don’t miss them!
Here’s my response to her, in case it disappears, as happens most of the time on hopolophobic’s websites.
“I own several guns. I practice safe gun handling and have never killed anyone, let alone shot anything living. I have a permit and carry a concealed weapon all the time. I lock up my guns in a safe and teach my children gun safety. My son has a cap gun which he treats as if it were real, i.e. not pointing it at people. He must ask to touch any of my guns and is supervised while doing so.
So, are you going to call me a bad parent too?
I happen to agree that it was irresponsible to allow their child to point a toy gun at people, but I feel you’re way overreacting.
Also, calling real cops with real guns in to deal with a child holding a toy is the height of irresponsibility. Are you, nuts?
Just the other day, some hopolophobic idiot on a freeway in Florida called the cops because the car beside her had a child playing with a toy gun. The cops tracked down the license plate number and early the next morning they busted down the door and stormed the house. In the resulting confusion it would have been easy for a cop with an itchy trigger finger to have made a mistake and killed someone. Just because some idiot let their irrational fear get the better of them.
In this world, there are three classes of people, Wolves, Sheep and Sheepdogs. Which one are you? As for me, I choose to be a sheepdog. Everyone is responsible for their own safety.
Because when seconds count, the cops are minutes away. Remember that.”

More PSH: Boy Gets Suspended for "Gun" Drawing
Chandler boy suspended for sketching gun
David Biscobing, Tribune
But parents of the 13-year-old, who attends Payne Junior High School in the Chandler Unified School District, said the drawing was a harmless doodle of a fake laser, and school officials overreacted.
“I just can’t believe that there wasn’t another way to resolve this,” said Paula Mosteller, the boy’s mother. “He’s so upset. The school made him feel like he committed a crime. They are doing more damage than good.”
Payne Junior High officials did not allow the Tribune to view the drawing. The Mostellers said the drawing did not depict blood, injuries, bullets or any human targets. They said it was just a drawing that resembled a gun.
But Payne Junior High administrators determined that was enough to constitute a gun threat and gave the boy a five-day suspension that was later reduced to three days.
The Tribune isn’t publishing the boy’s first name at the request of his parents.
The suspension follows an unrelated incident earlier this month in which Gilbert police were called to Payne Junior High School to investigate a rumor of a girl bringing a gun on campus. No gun was found and a letter was sent home to parents.
In the letter, school officials told parents about the incident and indicated there would be a zero-tolerance policy toward gun threats.
Chandler district spokesman Terry Locke said the school is not allowed to discuss students’ discipline records. However, he said the sketch was “absolutely considered a threat,” and threatening words or pictures are punished.
The school did not contact police about the threat and did not provide counseling or an evaluation to the boy to determine if he intended the drawing as a threat.
The Mostellers said their son has no discipline record at the school because they just moved from Colorado this year.
The sketch was one of several drawings scratched in the margins of a science assignment that was turned in on Friday. The boy said he never meant for the picture to be seen as a threat. He said he was just drawing because he finished an assignment early.
School officials issued the suspension on Monday afternoon and notified the student’s father, Ben. He met with school officials and persuaded them to shorten the suspension from five days to three.
A second student was also suspended Monday for a sketch on his homework. However, that student and his parents could not be reached for comment about the nature of that drawing.
Ben Mosteller was allowed to see his son’s drawing at the school but was not permitted to make a copy to bring home to his wife.
Paula Mosteller said she has been unable to reach the school’s principal, Karen Martin, or the vice principal, Dave Constance, since Monday to talk about the suspension. Martin and Constance did not return several phone calls to the school for comment.
When Ben Mosteller came to the school to discuss his son’s punishment, he said school officials mentioned the seriousness of the issue and talked about the massacre at Columbine High School — the site where two teenagers shot and killed 12 students and injured 24 others in 1999 at Littleton, Colo.
The Mostellers said the Columbine reference was extreme and offensive. They have contacted the district’s governing board about the incident.
“We understand that there was zero tolerance and the sketch could look like a gun, but the way this was handled was so horribly wrong,” Paula Mosteller said. “Hopefully, when my son goes back to school on Friday this will all be behind him. But a school accusing a child like this can have a huge effect on a child for the rest of his life.”

Hoplophobe Shoots, Thankful He’s Still Alive
A weekend in Las Vegas! The lights, the casinos, the shows, the glitz, the noise, the - guns?
“This here’s the easiest to start with. It’s got less kick so it’s easier to control.”
Into my hand he plops a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver. It’s only the second time in my life I’ve actually touched a gun (the first being during a Boy Scout trip). My hand droops under the surprising weight of the pistol. He chuckles. What am I doing here?
It’s Saturday afternoon, and having lost too much money all too quickly at the poker tables, my buddy and I are seeking refuge from the dry Nevada heat at a gun club a few miles off the Strip. We can’t remember whose idea it was, but neither of us thought we’d actually go through with it.
“That’s a great little gun there,” the other salesguy chimes in. “I’m giving one to my niece for her 21st birthday. She’s a fine shot.” I’m not sure whether he’s boasting or poking fun at me - probably both. Apparently, I’m holding a girl’s gun.
“Guns are great to have around,” he continues. “Just like seat belts and fire extinguishers - you don’t know when you’re going to need one, but when there’s an intruder in my house I’ll be glad to have it.” I look around and watch a dozen or so gun-toting, plaid-wearing bearded guys nod in agreement. I decide now’s not the time to mention that children can’t accidentally kill themselves by playing with seat belts and a fire can’t steal your fire extinguisher and use it against you.
Having completed my eight-second firearm tutorial, I don my safety goggles and large red earmuffs and head for the shooting range. Carefully cradling my pistol and a box of 50 .38 Specials to my chest, I ease my way down to lane number six. Every few seconds I violently twitch as another gun is fired; even with ear protection the noise is deafening. I’ll be glad to get out of here without soiling my undergarments.
I take my target - a large off-white sheet featuring a potential intruder’s head and torso - and clip it to the metal pole above me. A flick of a switch sends it flying backward into space. I load my pistol and take aim, briefly wondering how much it hurts to accidentally shoot oneself in the foot.
I squeeze off shot after shot, jumping at the sound of each one. Some people feel powerful with a pistol in their hand; I feel terror. I reload rapidly, hoping I run out of rounds before I run out of luck and end up with nine fingers.
It’s not until I leave that I relax enough to take a look at my target. Though I aimed at my intruder’s heart on every shot, most sailed wide, past his right shoulder. When I find an intruder in my house, I’ll just throw a fire extinguisher at him.
