Jackson marches on Lake Barrington gun manufacturer

The plain gray building set back in a Lake Barrington industrial park never captured much public attention until Tuesday, when Rev. Jesse Jackson’s entourage arrived aboard three buses.

About 200 activists, who marched in front of D.S. Arms, called for the northwest suburban community to vote the assault-weapon manufacturer out of town.

“Chicago is voted gun dry,” Jackson said, his voice booming through a microphone. “We want [Lake] Barrington to vote gun dry.”

Jackson used the company as a backdrop to a nationwide gun protest that he said was held in more than 20 U.S. cities to mark the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s historic 1963 march on Washington. Jackson and Rev. Michael Pfleger, who stood beside him in Lake Barrington, have held rallies in recent months, criticizing gun laws for being too lax and calling for a ban on assault weapons.

Such weapons are banned in Chicago, but Jackson and Pfleger say the law is useless because people buy them at shops in the suburbs and bring them into the city.

D.S. Arms does not sell firearms to the public, but has about 20 clients, including law-enforcement and military distributors, said Michael Danworth, a company spokesman. The business has operated for about 20 years, the last seven in Lake Barrington with about 25 employees, he said.

Addressing Jackson’s charge that the rifles end up on the streets illegally, Danworth said it is a culture of violence that’s the problem, not guns.

“The firearms used in most homicides in Chicago are pistols,” he said. “You don’t see too many gangbangers on the South Side carrying rifles in their pants.”

Village officials say the firm has operated in obscurity—but not illegally—for seven years in Lake Barrington. The large aluminum building has no signage.

Village President Kevin Richardson attended the rally, but was not aware of the business, said a spokeswoman.

“Everyone shares the goal of eliminating illegal drugs and illegal guns from our communities,” Richardson said in a prepared statement. “Since these problems do not know any borders, it is up to all of us to work together to keep our communities safe.”

More than 50 police officers were on hand to ensure a peaceful demonstration. While three busloads of demonstrators marched near the building, more than a dozen gun advocates carried signs that said: “You have the absolute right to defend yourself” and “Father, forgive Jesse. He leadeth down the wrong path.”

“When is the last time you heard a crime committed” in the city with an assault rifle, said Rick Sherrell, 53, of Fox River Grove.

Three large posters of the front cover of author Ken Timmerman’s book, “Shakedown: Exposing the Real Jesse Jackson” hung on the outside of the building.

Danworth said it was the company’s statement about Jackson’s “forever seeking another 15 minutes of fame.”

Jackson and his group of children and adults were unfazed. Five teenagers in matching red shirts served as symbolic pallbearers, carrying a small casket adorned with a cross and a sign that read: 31 children killed.

Jackson said the number of children killed in Chicago over the last year is now closer to 40.

“We want a future, not funerals,” the children chanted.

All in all a pretty balanced article, which is surprising…

If Jesse (Aren’t his 15 minutes up yet?) was honest, he’d march on the real source of the violence, drug and street gangs, but confronting gangs would be dangerous, someone could wear the wrong color and get hurt! Law abiding gun owners won’t shoot without just cause, and he knows this. Therefore, the safest thing for him and his “misinformed” followers to do is to march on an innocent gun manufacturer, chant and pray a bit…and go home!

Yet another victory for feeling over substance!

Buy a Gun Day Redux

We’re all familiar with April 15th as the original BAG (Buy a Gun) day. Now, in honor of Jesse Jackson and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership, I encourage everyone to buy a gun or ammunition on August 28th. Here’s why:

Jesse Jackson Arrested at Demonstration

Jesse Jackson has been protesting for stricter gun laws since a 16-year-old honor student was gunned down on a Chicago city bus.

Jackson was arrested when he refused to move away from the entrance to Chuck’s Gun Shop in Riverdale, police said. He has protested with other community activists outside the shop in recent weeks after a 16-year-old honor student was gunned down on a city bus.

Police said the shooting was gang-related but the teen was not the intended target.

Jackson, who says the gun shop’s proximity to Chicago provides gang members and criminals easy access to firearms, has used the protests to call for stricter gun laws.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest who oversees a South Side congregation, also was arrested and charged with Jackson.

A message seeking comment from the gun shop was not immediately returned Saturday afternoon.

Two teens have been charged as adults with taking part in the May shooting of Blair Holt, an honor student at Julian High School.

"Snuffy" at it yet again!

Action Alert for Saturday, June 23, 2007: Counter-Protest at Chuck’s Gun Shop, the 3rd Time in 4 Weeks

ISRA has found out that Fr. Michael Pfleger is going to march yet again atChuck’s Gun Shop, 14310 S. Indiana, Riverdale, IL on Saturday, June 23rd. This is four weeks after the highly publicized protest at the same location where he called for the “snuffing out” of Chuck’s owner, John Riggio. He will probably bring Reverend Jesse Jackson with him.

Many of you have followed the news about Pfleger’s threat and wished that you could have been at Chuck’s on May 26th to show your solidarity. Some of you took advantage of the short notice to come out to Chuck’s last weekend. ISRA 1st Vice President Mike Weisman was there to stand with John Riggio and the counter-protestors at both marches. He’s going to be there again, and he’s urging all gun owners who can do so, to come to Chuck’s this Saturday.

“Chuck’s Gun Shop is a part of my own personal history with firearms. I first went there over 25 years ago, when I lived in the city. The staff helped me get my first FOID card.” Mike Weisman said, “Chuck’s Gun Shop as been part of the community in the south suburbs for decades, it’s a vital, family-run business that should stay and serve the community in the decades to come.”

“So I’m going back there this Saturday, and I’m calling on my fellow ISRA members and Illinois Gun Owners from all across Chicagoland to join me. I’m also making a special appeal to those who have ties to this part of the metro area. It’s important to me personally that we have strong representation there.” Weisman concluded.

Background info: The owners of Chuck’s have been long-time defenders of the right to keep and bear arms. Unfortunately, they have paid dearly for supporting your rights. Chucks was the primary target of Mayor Daley’s $433 million lawsuit against the 2nd Amendment. Although the Daley suit failed, Chuck’s was forced to bear huge legal costs to defend their business - and to defend the 2nd Amendment. Chuck’s has also been harassed ceaselessly by anti-gun church groups and the gun-hating media - including “60 Minutes.” Rev. Jackson and Fr. Pfleger have marched twice on Chuck’s Gun Shop in the recent weeks, including May 26, when Fr. ISRA is calling upon gun owners to make the return trip to Chuck’s Gun Shop to take a stand for the right to keep and bear arms. Please do the following:

Late breaking news: We’ve just received word that Reverend Jesse Jackson & Operation PUSH is going to protest again at Chuck’s Gun Shop, 14310 S. Indiana, Riverdale, IL on Saturday, June 16th. This is three weeks after the highly publicized protest at the same location where Jesse’s pal, Fr. Michael Pfleger from St. Sabina called for the “snuffing out” of Chuck’s owner, John Riggio. It’s been predicted that Pfleger will return for a repeat performance.

Many of you have followed the news about Pfleger’s threat and wished that you could have been at Chuck’s on May 26th to show your solidarity. Tomorrow is your chance.
