3 out of 4 Americans Believe in Right to Own Firearms
You hear that Rebecca? In an earlier post Sebastian Sassi handily beat her in a debate on Al Jazeera’s English channel. In this debate she asserted that the majority of Americans supported more gun control and that we were in the minority. This Gallup poll suggests otherwise.
Public Believes Americans Have Right to Own Guns
Nearly three in four say Second Amendment guarantees this right
by Jeffrey M. JonesPRINCETON, NJ — A solid majority of the U.S. public, 73%, believes the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the rights of Americans to own guns. Twenty percent believe the amendment only guarantees the rights of state militia members to own guns.

Channeling Helmke to the masses
It’s inevitable that editorial boards (typically composed of liberals who know nothing of combat, tactics, guns, life, earth, reality, etc.) are going to come out with high-minded baloney against right to carry laws on college campuses. However, you have to wonder whether or not they are actually thinking for themselves or channeling Paul Helmke while pretending to think for themselves:
In dormitories, more guns will undoubtedly mean more gun-related accidents, more suicides and more senseless tragedies brought about by immaturity, lack of judgment, impulsivity, alcohol consumption or mental illness. But whatever their root cause, each of those incidents will only have been made possible by the proximity of guns.
So there it is. They’ve written off all college students as immature, idiotic, impulsive, drunks and sociopaths (just like Paul has almost word-for-word). They seem to forget that there are a lot of non-traditional students out there who would like to be safe in a classroom too.
Of course, I can think of a place where there are a whole lot more people of the similar ages to the average college classroom who are all sitting in “dormitories” with fully automatic firearms. It’s probably even more frightening to said editorial boards that these young people tend to be conformist and all wear the same clothes and speak respectfully of tradition, authority, and discipline.

Let’s also not forget that some of these guys are coming back and going to college. And now, the editorial boards are screaming that they are too immature to handle a firearm in a dangeous situation? Come on. They’ve been in combat how much more training do you need?!?!
This seems to me more like a case of projection. Go back and read that description again and you’ll probably get a good picture of what a bunch of hippie kids were like before they got a chance to be on editorial boards at local newspapers. You know, immature, idiotic, impulsive, drunks and sociopaths…
Where’s the crime reduction?
We keep talking about England’s out-of-control violent crime. We keep pointing out that the British government said that a drop in gun ownership would result in a drop in violent crime. We keep seeing stories where kids are being murdered anyway:
Kodjo Yenga was ambushed in a quiet London street by about a dozen youngsters armed with knives and bats. The 16-year-old tried to escape but was cornered and stabbed in the heart. The gang ran away laughing as the teenager lay bleeding in his girlfriend’s arms. He died later in hospital.
There it is again folks. Guns didn’t kill Yenga, people did. If they had had guns there’s little doubt that they would have used them to murder him. However, even if they did not have knives and baseball bats they would have proceeded to stomp the guy to death or beat his skull in with a brick. They were out for blood and Kodjo Yenga was unarmed.
Murderers are predators. They’ll kill simply because they want to, because they think it’s fun, because they won’t control themselves, because they want to show how powerful they are, or maybe just because they’re animals. They don’t kill because they have a weapon in their hands. The weapon is only a convenient tool. They would be just as lethal without weapons, just less efficient.
Yenga may have been lured into a bad situation in a moment of youthful pride, but the simple harsh reality remains that in London the criminals are armed and the citizens are easily lead to the slaughter. In the face of such a brutal reality, it is absolutely unfathomable why England has declared that the thugs can run free in the streets, but honest law-abiding subjects are not allowed to defend themselves with the only weapon available that could even the odds in such a situation.
It’s worse than unfathomable. It’s immoral.
The 3,500 pound elephant
Houston is a city with a problem: there are over a million weapons on their streets. It seems that every house has one and many have two or three. Children are constantly exposed to the threat and every year thousands are injured needlessly and many die horribly either through murder or accidents. Worse, when people die they rarely die alone. Houston is a city covered in blood and the politicians refuse to do anything about it.
Just today a businessman was forced to defend his life from such a weapon when he says he caught a thief red-handed. The thief didn’t like getting caught:
Suddenly, “the suspect puts (the truck) in drive and takes off in the direction of the business owner,” Chandler said.
Fearing that the truck would run him over, the business owner fired his weapon multiple times, striking the suspect in his side, he said.
The man kept driving for about three blocks before succumbing to his wounds, Chandler said.
Yep. The weapon was a truck. The guy tried to flatten him like an armadillo in the exit lane off I-59 outside the Rockets arena during the playoffs. Not a nice thing to do.
Now, here’s the part of the story that will really get you:
Under the so-called “Castle Doctrine,” Texas law allows citizens to use deadly force to protect their property. The case will be referred to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, where it will be reviewed by a grand jury, Chandler said.
Go ahead. Put up a big question mark over your head. I did.
It appears that the reporter thinks that the business owner only had the right to his pistol because he was on his property. The idea that he fired his pistol in self-defense when the bad guy was trying to run him over with a freakin’ truck is just too alien to a reporter. She thinks he was using deadly force to protect his property. After all, the guy in the truck wasn’t armed was he?
Of course he was! The muzzle energy of your typical 9mm is about 340 ft/lbs. Want to guess how much energy a 3,500 pound truck traveling at 35 mph carries behind it? Somewhere around 141,491 ft/lbs! A bullet will put a hole in you. A truck will make you into mush.
That doesn’t seem to matter though. Apparently the only weapon the reporter could see was the pistol. She couldn’t see the 3,500 pound elephant.
Quote of the day…
“The people of the various provinces are strictly forbidden to have in
their possession any swords, bows, spears, firearms, or other type of
arms. The possession of these elements makes difficult the collection of
taxes and dues and tends to permit uprising, therefore, the heads of the
provinces, official agents, and deputies are ordered to collect all
weapons mentioned above and turn them over to the government.”

Teen Sentenced to Give Speeches on Gun Control
Judge is lenient in sentencing teen who shot stepbrother
SEATTLE — A Burien teen who shot his stepbrother by accident has been sentenced to 24 months of home detention by a judge who said justice has to be tailored for each person.
Timothy Miller and Lena Jantoc pleaded for leniency for their son Jordan Jantoc almost a year after another son, Michael “Mikey” Miller, was accidentally shot and killed in the basement of their Burien home.
“We are overwhelmed every day. We feel it every day when we look at Jordan,” Lena Jantoc sobbed. “Punishing Jordan will never ease the pain of losing Michael.”
The family’s pastor, a school principal and tearful relatives all urged Superior Court Judge Harry McCarthy to not send Jordan, 16, to prison as recommended by prosecutors. The judge agreed.
“I think this is a case where justice needs to be tempered with mercy,” McCarthy said before he sentenced Jordan to 24 months of home detention, followed by probation when he will be required to give speeches on gun control.
“This is an extraordinary case to say the least,” McCarthy said. “It has resulted in a real tragedy for the family.”
Jordan cried throughout much of the court hearing and apologized repeatedly to his family for the pain he has caused them.
“I take full responsibility for what I did,” he said. “He was my brother. We did everything together.”
On Sept. 21, 2006, the two boys were in the basement of the family home when Jordan pulled a silver .380-caliber handgun from underneath his mattress to show his stepbrother. King County sheriff’s deputies said Jordan had obtained the weapon by trading a 9-mm Glock that he’d stolen from his stepfather.
The two were examining the weapon when it went off, a bullet lodging in Mikey’s collarbone.
“The gun was not aimed at Mikey,” defense attorney Matthew King said.
Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz told the judge that he and Jordan’s family had agreed that the teen should serve a significantly reduced sentence. Jordan had pleaded guilty in July to first-degree manslaughter, which carries a penalty of up to eight years in prison.
But Raz said Jordan should face incarceration for such a “serious violent crime” in addition to the 353 days of electronic detention he has served. McCarthy disagreed, though, and said justice “has to sometimes be tailored for each person.”
The Brady Campaign…the Criminal’s Best Friend
In actuality, this could apply to any of the anti-freedom groups out there. They say “We don’t want to ban your guns!” and then work actively to ban them and defend gun bans already in existence. They say, “We need sensible (common sense) gun laws!” while backing feel good legislation that does nothing to help crime and does more to hurt the law abiding gun owners. We have 20,000+ gun laws in this country already, if that many gun laws haven’t solved the problem, then what makes them think another one will have any more effect?
Criminals laugh at gun laws, plain and simple. They routinely break the law as it is, so why should they care about one more? The criminals will be armed, that is a fact. Even in the “gun free Utopia” of England and Australia, criminals seem to have an inexhaustible supply of firearms available to them. It’s no surprise to me and others like me that the violent crime level went up shortly after the law abiding citizens were forcibly disarmed.
Criminals prefer unarmed victims. In an interview with John Stossel, which was broadcast on nation wide TV, inmates openly admitted they chose victims who they thought would be unarmed. They admitted liking gun control laws because it made their job easier, and boasted how easy it was for them to get a gun if they wanted to. Criminals don’t buy their guns at the local Wal-mart or gun store, and as a result, they don’t have to pass a background check; it’s simply ‘cash & carry’ for them.
So as the anti-rights groups keep pounding away at our second amendment freedoms, all they are doing is empowering the criminal element. Is this really what they want to do? Probably not, but it makes you wonder. I’m sure there are some wonderful, but misguided people who are anti-gun. The problem is, they are so invested in their beliefs that no amount of “Reasoned Discourse” will ever change their minds. When someone presents facts that disprove their closely cherished world view, they just stick their fingers in their ears and say “lalalalalalalala - I can’t hear you!” Case in point, Paul Helmke and Robyn Ringler. They couldn’t take the heat, so they closed comments on their blogs. This does nothing to stop people with facts from disagreeing with them, but it means they don’t have to hear it.
I will never delete a comment just because the commenter disagrees with me, but I will not stand for personal attacks or rudeness. Luckily I’ve been troll free to this point, but just in case, that is my policy.
In Sarah Brady’s Utopian fantasy, guns have been banned, pure and simple. If she and her cohorts were honest with the American public they would admit this. And in this Utopian future, while you and I are disarmed and left to our own devices, the criminals will still have their weapons… Like sheep to the slaughter. Like I said before…
Criminals prefer unarmed victims!
