“In its second major ruling on gun rights in three years, the Supreme Court Monday extended the federally protected right to keep and bear arms to all 50 states. The decision will be hailed by gun rights advocates and comes over the opposition of gun control groups, the city of Chicago and four justices.
Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the five justice majority saying “the right to keep and bear arms must be regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as the States legislated in an evenhanded manner.”
The ruling builds upon the Court’s 2008 decision in D.C. v. Heller that invalidated the handgun ban in the nation’s capital. More importantly, that decision held that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was a right the Founders specifically delegated to individuals. The justices affirmed that decision and extended its reach to the 50 states. Today’s ruling also invalidates Chicago’s handgun ban.”

This story sounds vaguely familiar to others I’ve heard.
A Carmichael business owner said he is getting the runaround from Sacramento County law enforcement. He said officials confiscated his property and won’t give it back, even though he is not accused of doing anything wrong. The store owner in question is also a longtime state prison counselor who said he has always had a good working relationship with law enforcement.Bill Dunbar said he was acting in self-defense when he used a Smith & Wesson handgun to shoot and kill one of two men who broke into his store and threatened him a year ago.Afterward, sheriff’s investigators confiscated two of Dunbar’s collector’s edition guns, worth thousands of dollars, as part of the investigation. But a month after the surviving burglar was sentenced to prison and the case was closed, Dunbar is still being denied his confiscated property.”It’s not only that I have a right to have them, it’s my property. Why haven’t I gotten them back?” Dunbar asked.Adding to Dunbar’s concern is that the district attorney told KCRA 3 it has sent a letter to the sheriff directing the department to release Dunbar’s property. However, the Sheriff’s Department has repeatedly told KCRA 3 it has received no such letter.”Yeah, it’s the runaround. No one wants responsibility for anything,” Dunbar said. “You end up being the victim. You’re the one who almost seems like you did the wrong deed.”A district attorney’s official did acknowledge there appears to be some confusion. The Sheriff’s Department said it has not lost Dunbar’s guns, but because they are still considered evidence, the department could not show the guns to verify that.

A recent posting at the DU posits that the infamous gun banning organization is losing money and has only received one donation of $2,500 so far this year. If so, perhaps Paul Helmke and Petey Hamm will have to stop traveling first class and switch to a cheaper grade of snake oil.
A look at the opensecrets.org page for the Brady Campaign shows that, with the exception of the 1999-2000 donation cycle ($1.7M), the Brady’s have been losing money ever since, and in fact now pay out more money than they receive in donations.
What happened in the 1999-2000 donation cycle to boost donations so much? On April 20th, 1999 two psychopaths stormed their high-school in Littleton, CO and killed 13 people. I find it ironic that 8 years later, at Virginia Tech, 32 people lost their lives and there was no increase in donations. Either the general public has become wise to the Brady’s tricks, or there is some other factor at play here.
Now, with even more guns in public hands than ever before, crime is at an all time low. Whether or not this is the reason for the decline is immaterial, what is important to note, is there has been no increase in crime as a result. Proof positive I’d say that more guns does not mean more crime, proving John Lott right.
Whatever ends up happening to the Brady Campaign, I could care less. I know I certainly won’t be shedding any tears when they eventually disband and go away. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say.
Would the last one out of the building please turn off the lights? Thanks!
Apparently a publishing company thinks the founding documents are dangerous and require a warning sticker.
Story here:
A small publishing company is under fire after putting warning labels on copies of the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and other historical documents.
Wilder Publications warns readers of its reprints of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Common Sense, the Articles of Confederation, and the Federalist Papers, among others, that “This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today.”
The disclaimer goes on to tell parents that they “might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written before allowing them to read this classic work.”
Walter Olson, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, says the company may be trying to ensure that oversensitive people don’t pull its works off bookstore or library shelves.
“Any idea that’s 100 years old will probably offend someone or other,” Olson told FoxNews.com. “…But if there’s anything that you ought to be able to take at a first gulp for yourself and then ask your parents if you’re wondering about this or that strange thing, it should be the founding documents of American history.”
The warning seems to be offending more people than the documents themselves.
Amazon.com’s customer reviews of Wilder’s copy of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation show an overwhelming number of people speaking out against the disclaimer, describing it as “insulting,” “sickening” and “frankly, horrifying.”
Another review for Wilder’s edition of the Federalist Papers calls for an all-out boycott of the publisher, sarcastically pointing out the “dangerous ideas” it’s trying to protect children from: “limited government, checks and balances, constrained judicial review, dual sovereignty of states and federal government, and deliberative democracy.”
And though warning labels are usually posted to protect a company from potential lawsuits, constitutional attorney Noel Francisco says this disclaimer has no legal benefits.
“Would it ever be a legal concern that selling the Constitution would expose you to some kind of liability? No. Never,” Francisco told FoxNews.com. “The Constitution is the founding document of the country, an operative legal document.”
As for the idea that this warning label might help keep these works from being yanked off bookshelves, Francisco says it is more likely to have the opposite effect: people not carrying the book because it has the disclaimer.
“By putting on the warning, you’re making controversial something that’s not controversial: our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence,” he said.
Amazon customers appear to agree. Almost all of the reviews discussing the disclaimer end with the same thought: don’t buy from this publisher.
Efforts to reach the publisher were unsuccessful.
