A Brit Goes to a Gun Show

July 31, 2008 on 10:32 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Except for using terms such as “armor piercing bullets” and “assault rifles” he gets it right.

I don’t think the Democratic nominee would have felt at home with this crowd. I heard several references to Comrade Obama, and saw one button (which I coveted) that said, “I am a BITTER gun-owner.” They seemed to me an affable, friendly and very courteous bunch (well, you would be, wouldn’t you?). I don’t think you could mix with the show’s visitors for more than five minutes without thinking it was nonsense to attribute their interest in guns to bitterness or disappointment or some form of social pathology. But of course there is a political dimension. Aside from other motivations–sport, self-defence–the gun-show universe is about pride, self-reliance, and resentment at being bossed around. Distinctively American traits, wouldn’t you say? Best in moderation, no doubt–but still, where would the country be without those attitudes? I may get thrown out of Georgetown for this, but I say, good for them.

Keith Olbermann: Still a Douchebag

July 31, 2008 on 10:25 am | In Uncategorized | 2 Comments

I’m sorry, but how else do you describe someone who calls Justice Antonin Scalia as a “clown” and the “worst person”, while saying that the NRA wants gun deaths to increase? Oh, and don’t forget the “the second amendment only applies to muskets” canard. Geez, what a maroon!

Perhaps he’s compensating for something?

On Wednesday’s Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann claimed that pro-gun groups like the NRA “are trying to increase deaths by gun,” as he used his “Worst Person” segment to attack a gun rights activist who infiltrated gun control groups to spy on them: “Mary Lou Sapone infiltrated the executive boards and learned the plans of organizations trying to decrease deaths by gun in this country, and apparently reported it back to organizations like the NRA, which are trying to increase deaths by gun in this country.” A month earlier, on the June 26 show, after the Supreme Court struck down Washington, D.C.’s handgun ban, Olbermann named Justice Antonin Scalia, whom he called a “clown,” as “Worst Person” as the Countdown host ridiculously claimed that the Second Amendment only applies to the types of weapons that existed in 1791, like muskets, to be used in a militia. Olbermann: “You’ve got around 30,000 gun deaths in this country per year, another 75,000 non-fatal gun wounds, half the suicides are by gun; and this clown and his four colleagues decided that the 32-year-old ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., and the demand that firearms kept in the home be locked or disassembled was unconstitutional based on the Second Amendment.”

Mom Update

July 25, 2008 on 12:47 pm | In Uncategorized | 2 Comments

She seems to be improving and the last couple of days she has been stronger and more alert. She still needs help up and is too weak to walk, but I’m so relieved that she seems to be doing better. I just hope this continues.

My sister leaves tomorrow afternoon and then I will be on my own in helping my Dad with her until August 5th.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes and prayers! I’m sorry I haven’t expressed my appreciation until now.

My Mom

July 21, 2008 on 3:04 pm | In Uncategorized | 7 Comments

My sister and I have been asked to help take care of my mother this week while my Dad has cataract surgery and won’t be allowed to lift anything. I have been assisting my father with her already and I still have the three kids to take care of. My Mom is very ill and cannot stand or walk on her own. Everyday I wake up and expect her to have died during the night. I won’t go into details, but yes, it’s that bad. Some days are better than others, but even on the good days when I have spare time, it’s hard to get up the “gumption” to post something. I love my mom very much and it’s hard to watch her continue to decline day by day. It’s constantly  in the back of my mind.

I’m not taking a break from blogging, as attractive as that sounds, I just won’t be posting as much for a while…

Probation for Farina

July 18, 2008 on 10:26 am | In Uncategorized | 2 Comments

Good thing he is a celebrity, he could have done time…

Dennis Farina receives 2 years of probation for carrying gun into Los Angeles airport

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Dennis Farina may be able to carry a gun on-screen, but he won’t be able to own one in California for several months.

The actor’s attorney pleaded no contest on Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of bringing a weapon into a secure area at Los Angeles International Airport. A court commissioner sentenced him to up to two years of probation and ordered him to pay $1,991 in fines, said Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.

While on probation, Farina cannot own or carry a gun, Mateljan said.

A former policeman, Farina was arrested May 11 for having a .22 caliber semiautomatic handgun in his briefcase. He promptly apologized after his release, saying he forgot he had the gun in his baggage.

Farina has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including a three-year stint on “Law & Order” as detective Joe Fontana.

Other charges of carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a loaded firearm were dismissed.

Chinese journalists wounded in gun control display

Three journalists have been injured in a shooting accident at a media conference in southwestern China organised to highlight the success of a local gun-control campaign.

The incident occurred in Nanchong in Sichuan province.

Official media reports say a police officer dropped one of the weapons while attempting to display them to journalists, and it discharged by accident

It’s unclear if the gun was loaded with bullets or shotgun pellets, but one of the journalists required surgery after being hit in several places.
