Racing for Nothing

From The East Tennessean:

A three-and-a-half mile race through the tree streets led to 316 running shoes stampeding through the rain. The early rainy winds did not deter runners from coming out Saturday morning for the fifth annual “Take Back the Night 5k race.”

In rain gear and running shoes, 158 runners gathered to race for the safety of women and children.

All the proceeds go to programs that support survivors of sexual violence, including the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners at Johnson City Medical Center.

The proceeds from the race do go to a good cause, but while participating in this race might make the participants feel good, it does nothing to ensure the safety of women and children. Wouldn’t it be better to prevent these women and children from becoming victims and survivors in the first place?

If they really wanted to do something to protect those at risk, they would, for all that wanted it, donate a sidearm and training to use it.

Perhaps when I win the lottery I’ll start such a charity. One can dream, can’t they?

:-)
