More Defensive Gun Use

February 23, 2008 on 9:22 am | In Brighton, David Fleming, Keith Ingram, Tennessee, rape, sex offender |

If the Brady’s had their way, these two women would not have been rescued and very well might now be dead. It is my belief that the criminal in this story got what he deserved, and now thanks to a Good Samaritan with a gun, this piece of trash won’t be clogging up our already heavily overcrowded prison system and costing the tax payers thousands and thousands of dollars.

Sex offender fatally shot

Brighton man kills man attacking pair of women

A Brighton man shot and killed a 44-year-old registered sex offender who attacked two women in their home early Tuesday morning, officials said.

According to Dist. Atty. Gen. Mike Dunavant, David Fleming charged into the home of two women at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Fleming bound the women but one escaped and ran to a nearby home. Dunavant said Fleming, who lived in Munford, intended to rape the women.

The woman who escaped went to the home of Keith Ingram for help, Dunavant said.

Ingram, carrying a .40-caliber handgun, ran to the house and found Fleming attacking the other woman, officials said.

When Fleming tried to attack Ingram, Dunavant said Ingram shot Fleming once.

Tipton County Sheriff’s deputies and Brighton Police officers found Fleming dead on the front porch of the home.

Fleming had been convicted of attempted rape in Tipton County. He’s listed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s sex-offender registry.

Dunavant said Ingram has no criminal record and has a permit to carry the handgun.

The women who were attacked were treated at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton.

TBI officials are assisting with the case. The Shelby County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy. Investigators took statements from several witnesses Tuesday. The shooting is still under investigation.

  1. I find this rather strange, to be honest. There are three different “flags” that come up that the police should be very thorough with during the course of their investigation.

    1. The alleged rapist was found dead on the porch, NOT the bedroom where the attacks were alleged to take place.

    2. He attacked TWO women AT ONE ENCOUNTER. That is very difficult to do unless he had a gun, and there is no indication that the attacker had a gun.

    3. The woman who went to get the shooter did not call 911, which certainly would have been MY first choice had I been an victim in progress, but instead ran DOWN THE STREET (or to another house) to get the shooter.

The fact that he’s a registered sex offender seems to be clouding judgments, in my opinion. I would like to see the disposition of this case before I will believe the victims’ stories in this case.

  2. .40 caliber? One shot? Nice. It seems a 9mm would have done the same work but with more shots fired. Firing more than once would have been a shame considering this SOB was not worth it.

  3. anon:

    1. He could have conceivably lived long enough after being shot to make it from the bedroom (or wherever inside) to the porch, before expiring there. One-shot instant kills are not that common.

    2. Depending on how intimidated the victims were, it could be done with a knife. For example, holding and threatening one to get the other to cooperate.

    3. Perhaps she did not have a cell phone handy or on her person, and did not want to stay in the house where the attack was taking place to call 911 on a wired telephone. If you’re going elsewhere for that reason, why not go to someone nearby that you know and who you know will be armed?

None of this is to say the events shouldn’t be investigated, but there are perfectly reasonable explanations for all of the points you raise.

  4. Uhh, it’s been said that when seconds count, the police ar only minutes away. She no doubt ran to an armed neighbor, knowing he could respond a lot quicker.
