You can't beat mil-surp for price, that's for sure. The local supply of surplus Mosin ammo has dried up and the retail hunting ammo is more than I'm willing to pay. I have to go to gun shows to find cheap Mosin ammo.

Mail order is attractive, though one of these days it's going to be gone. I'm going to try and order some for my reserves in January.

I bought 800 rounds of Yugoslavian a while back. It'll be a while before that's gone. Depending on the costs of the ammo, I might start reloading afterwards (for $80, it was much cheaper to buy it).

thanks for the info. I will be very interested to hear how your handloads shoot compared to the mil-surp.

I've only shot it to 100 yards, but it does group well considering it only has iron sights*. If I remember correctly, I can put them in a 6" circle, and I'm convinced the gun is more accurate than I am.

I've been using mil-surp ammo of differing nationalities and brand new Wolf. I've found the Wolf to be hotter and it shoots to a higher POI. I wouldn't recommend Bulgarian though, see the post below this. I've also heard bad things about the Greek ammo. The Polish seems to work well.

Hopefully this batch will improve my accuracy with this weapon. I don't have a lot of faith in the accuracy of mil-surp ammo. It was produced in massive quantities and only had to be "good enough." When I take my Mosin to the range again I'll be sure and post the results here.

The Sierra manual lists this load as having a MV of 2,500 FPS, which I think is probably optimistic. The 147 gn loading for mil-surp ammo is supposed to have a 2,400 FPS MV so theoretically this load should be roughly equal to that.

Perhaps I'll be brave enough to borrow one of the clubs chronographs and see what the MV turns out to be. I've always been afraid I'd shoot one of them. I might just buy one for myself though, they're not that expensive.

My shoulder is already aching in anticipation! :-)

*I have trouble seeing the target as it fuzzes (is that a word?) out on me.

Cool!

Let us know how they shoot.

What accuracy do you get with your mosin with regular ammunition, and what ammunition do you use?
